How Much Should I Tip? A Holiday Tipping Guide
During the holiday season, it’s customary to tip service people who have provided you and your family with exceptional service throughout the year. Nanny: One-Two Week’s Pay
A nanny or au pair should be tipped one-two week’s pay, and will probably also enjoy a homemade gift from your kids. Remember these are the people who care and love your children when you’re not home!
And if your nanny hasn’t been with you a full year, prorate the bonus and let her know what to expect next year. If two weeks is too much, provide extra days off!
Babysitter: One Night’s Pay
Unless your babysitter has provided truly extraordinary service over the course of the year, an appropriate tip is equal to one night’s pay.
Day Care Providers: Cash and a Gift
As with a nanny, it’s customary to give both a gratuity and a small gift to a day care provider who works closely with your child each day. The amount can vary; the Emily Post Institute recommends tipping your day care provider anywhere from $25-$70.
Teachers: Gifts Only
Most schools have guidelines but a cash tip is not appropriate for your child’s teacher; however, a gift is always appreciated, especially a homemade one. Beware the temptation to compete with other parents by getting the teacher something expensive or flashy. A gift card to is usually appreciated and some schools pool and give gifts as a whole.
Tutors and Music Teachers: Cost of One Visit
If your child takes personalized classes with instructors outside of the school setting, you may consider a tip equal to the cost of one lesson or session.
